WILD PINES

Wild Pines, a serene hilltop retreat in Sparks Glencoe, Maryland, seamlessly integrates home and landscape to celebrate the surrounding farmland and woodland views. Designed in collaboration with the homeowners—an interior designer and a general contractor—the garden enhances the modern farmhouse aesthetic with structured yet naturalistic plantings and thoughtful circulation. The front entrance was reimagined with a staggered-edge bluestone walkway, a stucco and bluestone retaining wall, and birch trees that soften the architecture while guiding visitors to the main entry. In the backyard, the removal of an old asphalt driveway transformed the space into an immersive garden with a semi-circular gravel path defining the lush planting beds. A covered patio blurs the boundary between indoors and out, offering a sheltered vantage point for observing wildlife and seasonal garden changes. The planting design balances a vibrant, four-season palette with a naturalistic approach, blending ornamental perennials, grasses, and native species that thrive without irrigation. The result is a dynamic, ever-evolving landscape that embodies the property’s name—Wild Pines—offering a sense of both cultivated beauty and untamed nature.
